In the worst of men, there is a little touch of goodness that will destroy them.

The enduring success of the 1955 film The Ladykillers has seen it adapted into a Czech opera (1967), a Coen Brothers film (2004), and a West End play (2011).

Brendan Donovan, Senior Lecturer in the Screen programme at the University of Auckland and a filmmaker himself (The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell) will explore the underlying themes of William Rose’s original screenplay – stasis vs. change, lethal innocence, the end of Empire - and how these have been co-opted and reimagined in the later adaptations.

The 1955 film was also the last of the great Ealing Studios comedies, and the director, Alexander Mackendrick, used the project to comment not just on England, but the studio itself. A talk for lovers of film, theatre, and of the importance of the arts as both entertainment and social commentary.

This is the first talk in the Maidment Lecture Series for 2015. Join us on Friday 20 February at 6:30pm in the Musgrove Studio, before the 8pm performance of The Ladykillers.

Cost: free. All welcome.
To secure your place, please RSVP to maidmentbooking@auckland.ac.nz.
Start time: 6:30pm
Running time: approximately 40-50 minutes.

The Musgrove Studio bar will be open from 6pm.

The Maidment Lecture Series is a series of lectures, talks or discussions that will pair a University of Auckland academic with a Maidment Theatre show.
