Ocean voyaging waka are in town and you can climb on board!

The historic Hawaiian waka Hikianalia from the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) has set up home at the Maritime Museum. She's taking part in Mālama Honua, a round-the-world voyage to spread the message of ocean conservation. Not only are the waka visiting 25 nations on their epic four year journey, the crew are also navigating by the stars.

Based at the Maritime Museum for the New Zealand leg of their journey, you can climb on board Hikianalia and meet the crew at a special public open weekend on 7 and 8 March.

Come along to find out more about ancient navigation techniques, call in at the science station to see the marine research the crew are doing on the way, and learn how we can all care for the ocean.

You can even take a guided tour of the waka and get involved with the voyage by sewing your message into a special quilt that will travel around the world.

From ancient technology to carbon fibre, the Viaduct is also home to the Volvo Ocean Race Village and the Museum is at the heart of the action. While you're here be sure to check out '40 Years, 40 Faces', the official photography exhibition for the Volvo Ocean Race in the Museum stairwells, and have a go at the Volvo Adventure trail. There's a version for adults and one for the kids.

NZ author Simon Bliss will also be sailing his classic yacht Rivale into Princes Wharf and you can climb on board for book signings of his latest release - 'Sea Legs: a Boat’s Story'.

And if you've got any energy left, there's free face painting for the kids outside the Museum.

Part of Sea Week 2015, all the activities are free with Museum entry and there’s no need to book. Simply drop into the Maritime Museum between 10am – 3pm on 7 and 8 March.
