A special event for nature lovers.
Love Birds is a Great Barrier Island weekend getaway to view native land and sea birds in their pristine natural environment.

The weekend gets underway on the Friday evening with dinner and a talk by Judy Gilbert from Windy Hill Sanctuary on GBI native birds.

Saturday will feature a boat cruise up the beautiful west coast of the Island, exploring the private and secluded bays and inlets on the way, meandering through the Broken Islands and visiting the Gannet colony. Along the way you may see Shags (perhaps our resident Spoonbill will make an appearance), Little Blue Penguin, Grey-faced & Cook's Petrel or Shearwater. Enjoy dolphins on the bow and the sun in your face as you make your way through Man-O-War passage into stunning Port FitzRoy Harbour before you enjoy a delicious lunch on board.

The afternoon features a tour of Glenfern Sanctuary, a predator-controlled area that provides safe habitat for threatened species including Black Petrel, Chevron Skink, Cooks Petrel and Pateke. The visit to Glenfern includes a talk about the history and ecology of the sanctuary, prior to a guided tour which includes transport to a stunning viewpoint, followed by a walk along a quad bike track via re-vegetating native bush plus established broadleaf and Kauri forest, taking you also into the crown of a 600 year old Kauri tree via a swing bridge and to see Black Petrel burrows before you return to the interpretation room via Glenfern walk, which descends through a valley of pristine old growth forest.

The evening features dinner and a talk by Elizabeth (Biz) Bell, senior ecologist, Wildlife Management International.

Sunday you will have the option of a guided walk to either the summit of Hirakimata (Mt Hobson) with senior ecologist Elizabeth (Biz) Bell from Wildlife Management International or to Whangapoua Beach with Helen Mabey, Whangapoua Beach farm owner, walking several kilometres along the beach to view seabirds such as Oyster catchers, Caspian Tern, NZ & Banded Dotterel and Pateke.
