People from our South Wairarapa community are being called on to be trained as “community scientists” to help collect and measure kākahi (freshwater mussels). This is part of a new scientific monitoring programme of the kākahi population of Lake Wairarapa. Initial training is on the 21 February, for those who are keen to be leaders. Then about three hours on the actual survey morning (21 March). Helpers will wade in the lake for 30 minutes collecting kākahi and then do some measuring and recording before the kākahi are returned to the lake. If you are interested in getting involved in this please contact Toni on 06 826 1535 or toni.delautour@gw.govt.nz.
