A Different Kind of Buzz

Torbay Theatre presents Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones, at the Gate Theatre. Performances 21 – 29 August. Combining echoes of Hamlet, the life of bees, and astrophysics, this warm and touching comedy was first performed at the British National Theatre in 2001. The original cast included Diana Rigg and Simon Russell Beale. Humble Boy won Best New Play awards from Critics’ Circle and People’s Choice, while The Daily Telegraph wrote: ‘Rich, original, intelligent, funny and touching. I can’t recommend this lovely play too highly.’

Felix Humble, a bumbling Cambridge astrophysicist, returns home for his father’s funeral. He finds Flora, his elegant but difficult mother, has already replaced his gentle father with the vulgar George Pye. Meanwhile, kindly neighbour Mercy Lott buzzes round doing all the work. Secrets come flying out as Felix struggles with the past and what is yet to come.

Anne Rimmer, the director and set designer, has been active in local theatre for 25 years. In ‘Humble Boy’ she brings together a small group of experienced actors who are relishing the clever dialogue of this beautiful, intricately-layered play. With the help of a team of willing workers, the intimate stage of the Gate Theatre, next to the Torbay Community Hall, is currently being transformed into an English country garden, complete with beehive.

With only seven performances, booking is advised. Please email torbaytheatre@gmail.com, or phone 473 5454.

‘To bee or not to bee, that is the question.’
