The unique challenge of deconstructing and reusing every single piece of one “Red Zoned” Christchurch home (right down to the last splinter, and the bone found under the house) forms the basis for the Whole House Reuse project.

The result is an exhibition of nearly 400 useful objects, from fine jewellery and cutlery to furniture, toys and a small studio “The Cocoon”. This is the final week of the exhibition. The Cocoon is a prototype for a ten-square-metre studio made almost entirely from salvaged materials.

Nic Moon and Lyn Russell - artist and architect - will talk about the joys and challenges of designing a versatile building that could be replicated, that met the building code and that could be dismantled and moved. Their aim was to celebrate the vibrant human and environmental stories held in the tissue memory of these precious used materials. The Cocoon and the Whole House Reuse project have become an act of defiance and a positive protest in the face of the almost 10 000 homes that have been demolished by digger and assigned to the scrap heap.
