Please join us on Wednesday 4 March at 12.15pm for our History Group public talk for 2015.

Aroha Harris will talk about new perspectives on Māori history, drawing on the work she, Judith Binney and Atholl Anderson undertook when writing Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History.

Published by Bridget Williams Books and described by Sir Tipene O’Regan as ‘one of the most significant books on the Māori world ever written’ this one-volume history of Māori presents a sweeping narrative from ancient origins in South China to the present day.

This free public talk offers a glimpse into an exceptional new history that is important to all New Zealanders.

About the speaker:

Aroha Harris (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi) is a Lecturer in History at the University of Auckland. Her PhD reflects her interest in Māori histories of the twentieth century. Aroha Harris also has a background in both historical and social research for various government agencies and iwi. The author of a book on political protest in the late twentieth century, Hīkoi (2004), she worked alongside others to establish Te Pouhere Kōrero, the national collective of Māori historians and researchers.
