This workshop is designed to help non-native speakers improve their pronunciation using a variety of techniques. A selection of materials and techniques drawn from applied linguistics, phonetics and psychology stimulate a raised awareness of various patterns and cultural meanings in Kiwi English. Students engage in communicative listening and speaking activities, produce audio recordings and prepare short presentations. The workshop is highly student-centred with small group numbers to enhance comfortable and fulfilling oral communication in academic, professional and social encounters.

Course aims:
- To develop students’ understanding of individual pronunciation targets.
- To enhance students’ ability to effectively self-correct speech production and make appropriate corrections
- To broaden student’ English vocabulary with an emphasis on business terminology and expressions.
- To provide students with confidence to manage a variety of business situations confidently.

Course length/time:
The course is continuous and may be attended for a minimum of 8 one-hour sessions. Workshops are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2pm to 3pm.

Course content:
Each week students will study a variety of pronunciation elements, including:
- Vowel and consonant sounds
- Articulation of diphthongs and associated triphthongs
- Reduction in grammatical words (use of strong/weak forms)
- Recognise and apply phonetic symbols when using English pronunciation
- Word and sentence stress, rhythm, sense and breath groupings, intonation and fluency

Course outcomes - Students will:
- Be easily understood when communicating with native speakers by using sentence stress correctly.
- Demonstrate intention and attitude through the use of appropriate intonation patterns.
- Demonstrate fluency through the correct application of the weak form of grammatical words.
- Identify those compound vowel sounds of Standard English which are problematic for you. Recognise all the phonetic symbols and apply this knowledge when using and English dictionary and for self-improvement
