Adoption was one of the hidden ‘shapers’ of many lives in 20th century New Zealand.

The subject is movingly explored by novelist Elspeth Sandys, as she tells her own story.

The first nine months of her life were spent in Dunedin’s Karitane Hospital, before she was adopted out. She had a warm and loving father, a mother who really did not want a daughter, and an older brother whom she adored.

Elspeth Sandys was awarded the ONZM for services to literature in 2006. Join her in conversation with Nelson counsellor and writer Liz Price, who is also adopted.

Come early to order coffee - when the talking begins the machine is turned off!

Listen later to selected sessions broadcast on Fresh FM.
