Dr Paul Quigley is an engaging presenter, emergency medicine specialist, and alcohol harm reduction campaigner. He will talk about the Wellington A&E experience of screening for alcohol involvement of anyone presenting with an injury to the emergency department at Wellington hospital. Brief interventions are then used with an aim to prevent further harm including referrals. The demographic data is collated and shared with regional public health. This allows for the creation of a risk assessment for geographic areas of Wellington, which has been used when making district licensing decisions and local alcohol plans. Such is the success of the programme, it is now being rolled out by other DHBs around the country.
