The second of two special double feature shows - one ticket price, two performances. Melbourne's Jason Geary presents Zoom; then meet Dieter Uberpfister and watch him cut through corporate jargon with an iron fist.

Spark (Melbourne)

Out of the darkness, we can see a blue speck. Zoom in. It is the Earth, alive and teeming with possibility. Zoom in further, through the clouds, we see a long island. We can see a city, bustling and alive. Zoom in again. You notice a small theatre on a thoroughfare, it's hosting a festival. Zooming even further we enter the theatre and the minds of two improvisors. There is a drummer, punctuating every breath, and every narrative detail. Zoom out now. Where will you go next?

Jason Geary’s deft hand at storytelling and improvisation are set to intrigue you in this new format. The production is a surprising and imaginative new form of theatre. Performers and audience alike direct the narrative, transgressing geographic borders, social stereotypes and physical obstacles at will. Zoom is a uniquely visual improvised show. Two improvisors will narrate the audience through the world around them to create scenes then step into the characters they have created to perform. It’s a fluid, magical and rich theatrical experience that will broaden what you expect from improvised theatre.

Zoom is inspired by the works of Haruki Murakami, Gabriel García Márquez and improvised Jazz. ZOOM is envisaged as a kind of Birdman-for-the-stage, with the audience using their imagination to build the world seen through a single camera shot, following their every interest, whim and desire. Scenes, stories and characters are evolved and investigated, with each action spurred on by a live percussionist.

Arbeitszufriedenheit with Dieter Uberpfister
Greg Ellis (Wellington)

Dieter Uberpfister was once an East German athlete and senior Vice-President in a ploughshare manufacturer. Now he is here to bring his no-nonsense solutions to your workplace problems. Can't stand your boss? Can't find the work/life balance? Dieter knows the answers!

Which is a good thing, since Greg Ellis, his alter ego has never worked in an office for longer than a few months in his life! But with 25 years helping entertain the corporates of New Zealand Greg has seen more than his fair share of corporate nonsense which he will put a completely improvised spin on every night.

Audience members will be invited to share their grievances and the things that make their work life less than ideal. Dieter knows the answers!

Watch him cut through corporate jargon with an iron fist. Fists can't cut you say? Dieter has other ideas.

The New Zealand Improv Festival serves up a smorgasbord of improvised theatre to Wellington, New Zealand, all performed by the country’s top companies and practitioners. With 20 shows in just five days, there's something for everyone - comedy, horror, music, poetry and more!
