Door sales are available for $25 from 6.30pm at the venue on Saturday night.

No-one plays rhythm & blues like Darren Watson. Over the better part of three decades he has developed a style that, while touching on all of the greats who inspired him, is personal, powerful and identifiably his own.

Watson gained national fame in the 80s as the fresh-faced, young front-man and guitarslinger for Chicago Smoke Shop. The band made two charting albums, had several radio hits, opened for international blues legends like Koko Taylor, Robert Cray, George Thorogood, & The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They toured tirelessly earning Watson a place alongside the likes of Midge Marsden, Hammond Gamble and Rick Bryant as one of New Zealand's best blues interpreters.

Since leaving Smoke Shop in the early 90's he has cemented his reputation as the country's most original, contemporary blues voice, with four albums of world-class blues music: 2002's Tui-nominated King Size, 2005's South Pacific Soul, 2010's internationally acclaimed Saint Hilda's Faithless Boy, and 2014's Introducing Darren Watson. During this time Darren also fulfilled a life-long ambition working alongside one of his childhood R&B heroes, touring extensively as sideman for Midge Marsden and, more recently performing as side-man to Chicago blues harmonica legend Billy Boy Arnold. He's also opened for New Orleans funkster Dr. John, Doug McLeod, Joe Cocker, Keb Mo, and nu-soul exponent Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, as well as appearing at WOMAD, Australian Blues Music Festival, Blues On Broadbeach, and selling out many festival appearances in New Zealand.

In 2009 Watson won first place in the 2008 International Songwriting Competition(Blues), judged by artists like Tom Waits, James Cotton, & John Mayall. And he has been a finalist in that competition every year since. Kiwi blues legend Midge Marsden leads off his new album Back To The Well with Darren's song Love Is An Ocean.

Probably the single biggest thrill Darren had recently was receiving an unsolicited facebook message from Mavis Staples sideman, guitarist and LA blues legend Rick Holmstrom saying:

" Darren, I recently saw a clip of you on the youtubes. You're a mutha! "

On a recent trip to the USA Holmstrom actually handed Darren his guitar mid-gig and sat back for a listen.

In August 2014 Darren released a single called Planet Key, a song satirising the current Prime Minister of New Zealand. It was hugely popular online with an accompanying video. The song got to over 100,000 views within a week and reached #5 on the NZ Top 20 Singles Chart before the NZ Electoral Commission advised that the song was not able to be broadcast or sold without risking prosecution. Darren has challenged the advice in the High Court.

Darren's latest album Introducing Darren Watson was released on November 7, 2014. It entered the Official NZ Artist Album Charts at #6.

Joining him for this show will be Matt Hay and Clint Meech. Loosely in the alt. country/Americana camp and with his lived in voice and everyday stories of beautiful losers coping with life's ups and downs, Hay draws comparisons with fellow roots rock travelers such as John Hiatt and Willy Mason or even our [New Zealand's] own Barry Saunders.

Matt & Clint will also join Darren on harmonica and piano respectively to end what promises to be a great concert for lovers of acoustic music, be it blues, country, folk, or soul.

Note the early start time. 7pm
