This will be a virtual tour and consist of a presentation on sites of cultural importance to the Maori in the Mackenzie Basin.

Te Manahuna: Traditions, Trails, Place Names and Connections.

The Ngāi Tahu cultural association with Te Manahuna (Mackenzie Basin) is founded on relationships that have formed over hundreds of years. Te Manahuna was a fundamental component of the traditional Ngāi Tahu systematic food gathering patterns, and its central location meant Ngāi Tahu hapū from all over the eastern and southern seaboards of the island regularly visited Te Manahuna on seasonal mahinga kai expeditions. The Basin itself contains a myriad of cultural sites and landscape features that are inter-weaved through a mixture of mythology, occupation, settlement, food gathering and travel.

In this talk Ngāi Tahu representatives will present the Ngāi Tahu stories, place names, mythology and sites of cultural significance for Te Manahuna by using the latest Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. Much of this history was recorded onto maps, manuscripts and submissions in the nineteenth century and this latest technology allows these stories to be viewed on a 3D virtual landscape that has never been available before.

Present this ticket at the Mackenzie Country Inn, Red Cat Biplane Flights, Shawty’s, and Mt Cook Alpine Salmon for a 10% discount. Bookings may be required. See Festival website for full details and promotion dates.
