On show during the Wellington Capital City 150th celebrations, at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts, is a curated survey show of Catherine Manchester’s works.

Painting from the last 5-10 years and also some historical works from private collections and her own collection will be on show. The works include paintings and drawings featuring the recent Model Habitat works , five of which were exhibited in New York last year and the Happenstance works , many of which were sold over the last few years.

The Happenstance works were her most difficult stylistic shift as the works were spontaneous using flurried strokes of a palette knife instead of her well known rubbing out method of revealing the figure . Groups of figures moving in a mass as though blurred brought together colour and texture in a heady mix: “Faces would pop up spontaneously and in an instant you would decide to keep them or not.Understandably this was a very expensive way to paint !”

“ I have felt compelled to paint the figure for 30 years and for me it’s a subject where I can express myself emotionally and display the interior life of my subject/s. I have been going to life drawing classes over 30 years so have an academic knowledge though I often subvert this when I paint with an emphasis on the metaphysical.”

There will be 60 works available from small meditations on the figure and portrait to large scale works on canvas.
