NZIF Ensemble led by Lori Dungey (Auckland)

Booya: Blow it Out Your Ahem is a thrilling mash-up of Harold and modern dance. Pairing physical work inspired by Rachel Rosenthal with the quintessential long-form improvisation form Harold, Lori Dungey presents a NZIF ensemble cast in a work that is stunning, hilarious and quite unexpected.

In 2000 Rachel Rosenthal was tasked by Unexpected Productions in Seattle with making sluggish improvisors look like amazing movement artists. She was an interdisciplinary performer, a theatrical marvel and a combination of Yoda and Martha Graham.

Lori realized that Rosenthal's dynamic form of movement was the perfect pairing with Harold, a long form improv structure. With a theme from the audience for the Harold, 5 improvisors begin creating scenes, monologues, and songs inspired by that theme. The rest of the cast become the movement performers that punctuate, accentuate and create fabulous imagery, sound and motion in between it all. Add live musos and you've got a show full to bursting.

Lori Dungey has been coming to NZIF for years to perform and participate in the workshops but this is her first time to put up her hand to direct a festival ensemble. She's been a professional improvisor, actor, writer, director and tutor for over 35 years. She came to Auckland with the Vancouver Theatresports League for the International Theatresports Commonwealth Games Festival in 1990. She never left!

She was the first Artistic Director for The Improvisors in Wellington who have just celebrated their first 25 years. She's currently a Creative Director, performer and trainer with ConArtists, (formerly Theatresports Auckland). Lori has devised and performed in over 50 improvised productions - both long and short form, including Suspect: A Game of Murder, an improvised murder mystery that's been performed throughout Canada, Sweden, USA, Australia and NZ. In 2011 she went to Adelaide for a sellout season of Austen Found: The Undiscovered Musicals of Jane Austen. Also with ConArtists; Enid Untold: Five Go Mad on Improv - an Enid Blyton themed long form, Oliver Twisted, inspired by Charles Dickens, and New Zombieland: An Improvised Musical.

The New Zealand Improv Festival serves up a smorgasbord of improvised theatre to Wellington, New Zealand, all performed by the country’s top companies and practitioners. With 20 shows in just five days, there's something for everyone - comedy, horror, music, poetry and more!
