A chance to try Belly Dance with one of Christchurch's most experienced teachers. No experience needed.

If you like it - come again next week. Or the week after. Or try one of Kashmir's other classes in other suburbs.

Belly dance is a dance form that emphasises movements of the torso rather than the limbs – and is linked to Middle Eastern culture and music. Belly Dance Basics concentrates on the movement vocabulary and putting it together rather than the cultural side. Characteristic movements include hip work, shimmies, undulations, isolations and layering (doing multiple things at once).

The class will cover basic technique that is common to a range of belly dance styles. It is designed for those who have never tried belly dance before or are at beginner level. However, intermediate dancers (> 5 years) may still gain useful tips. Moves will be taught at multiple levels allowing for a range of abilities and experience. Drills, combos and improvisation will then extend your knowledge. Recently a class included both people doing their first belly dance lesson and two with 20 years experience - all enjoyed the class and found it fun and effective.

Belly Dance springs from social dance and in this class both the more relaxed social style (beledi) and the performance style (sharqi) will be covered. Contrary to what you may find on the internet, belly dance is suitable for men, women and children (however, children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible, paying adult in Belly Dance Basics).
