K’ Road’s Gift of Art to the Community

Colour and vibrancy ooze from every corner of K’ Road’s famous strip. From its offbeat gift shops, to its quirky collection of vintage and experimental fashion stores, to its underground music venues. Even the walls of the buildings punctuating the area’s one kilometre stretch of retail, office and residential space are peppered with expressions of the precinct’s artistic heart. Could it get any more colourful? Apparently so.

Come the weekend of 10-12 April 2015, ten leading New Zealand street artists, including some who earned their stripes in the back-streets and alleyways of this 24-hour precinct, will be descending on the area with the aim of leaving their creative signature on ten giant canvases – a collection of blank walls earmarked for an injection of urban art by All Fresco Festival organisers Ross Liew and Cleo Barnett.

All Fresco is a three-year-old festival, sponsored by The K’ Road Business Association, which sees a selection of new walls transformed annually by some of New Zealand ‘s leading street artists.

‘We often target walls that get vandalised a lot or might be a bit dodgy at night,’ says Cleo. ‘The idea is to give them new life, to give the walls new energy. And it seems to be working, ’she says. ‘I think all the artists now are done with just putting their names on walls. They actually want to respond to the neighbourhood and to the site. And property owners are realising that the value of their properties will go up if a really beautiful artwork is put on the wall.’

And this year’s line-up of confirmed artists looks set to satisfy even the most doubtful of business or property owners. Owen Dippie, whose beatific Madonna graces the side of the former Shaver Shop at the top of Pitt St, is booked to return to work alongside the entranceway to the new cycleway running from Upper Queen St to Beach Rd. Xoe Hall, whose pop surrealist images are peppered throughout inner city Wellington, is scheduled to turn the side of Auckland’s needle exchange in East St into a bus shelter scene. And Askew One, the creative force behind the abstract work at the Pitt St end of Poynton Terrace which captivated tourists and locals alike for a decade before falling victim to Rugby World Cup 2011 clean-up fever, will be brightening the southern side of the Mercury Lane carpark building. Artists Berst, Cinzah, Drypnz, Haunt1, Jeremy Shirley, Tanja Jade, Erin Forsyth, Gasp, TrustMe and Component, complete the list of distinguished mural artists who have been commissioned to deliver public artworks under the gaze of onlookers over All Fresco weekend.

Workshops on typography, sticker, stencil and zine-making are also on the festival programme in a bid to allow attendees opportunity to move beyond being simply onlookers. Walking and bike tours of the All Fresco art circuit are also on offer.
All Fresco 2015 kicks off on Thursday 9 April with an exhibition at Yes Collective entitled No Thing which will see a collection of New Zealand street artists, including All Fresco participants, showcasing work over a range of mediums from installation pieces to video production. On-street art work, meanwhile, will launch on Friday 10 April at 78 Pitt St following a blessing by Pitt St Methodist Church Minister Lynne Frith.

Newcomers to All Fresco are invited to ‘grab a map and a friend and come along and discover a side of K’ Road you might not have seen. This is like a gift for the community,’ says Cleo. ‘If you’re putting art out there, it’s about the community.’
