Marine Reserve biodiversity - more than you bargain for: Baselines, Resilience and the Blue Economy

Over ten percent of the biodiversity surveyed in Akaroa Harbour in the early 1980’s, well prior to the establishment of the Akaroa marine reserve, was deemed to be either new to the region or new to science. Is this still the case - has it increased or decreased over time? What does this actually mean anyway, given the data is based mainly on sponges, sea squirts and algae amongst other encrusting organisms. How does this seabed diversity affect reef fishes and those fish species passing through?

Dr Battershill will focus on Akaroa Harbour and the establishment of marine reserves in general. He will talk about a wide array of attributes of marine protection.
