Join us for a unique opportunity to hear James in recital on the eve of his departure to join the prestigious National Opera Studio in London.

"James is a young singer with great potential and I am delighted that the Foundation is able to support him at this important stage of his singing development. The invitation to join the NOS (National Opera Studio) program comes at the right time for James because it will provide a sound benchmark from which to develop his talent and keep that forward momentum on track. His commitment to hard-work and role development will I hope lead to success, providing the full understanding of a sound technique is achieved. He has worked hard and has the tools for this difficult profession." Kiri Te Kanawa – May 2, 2015

New Zealand Bass-Baritone James Ioelu completed a Master’s of Music in Performance Voice at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Maitland Peters. During his studies he performed in a number of MSM productions including Faust (Mephistopheles), The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Trinity Moses), The Ghost’s of Versailles (Louis XVI) and Dreaming of Wonderland (Knave).

Since completing formal training at Manhattan School of Music, James has concentrated on refining his vocal technique and performance skills; notably he has spent time with respected teacher and coach Madame Virginia Zeani as well as time in France and Italy for language training. He has performed a number of roles and concerts in America, Europe and New Zealand, including playing the role of Bruno, in the world premier of Michael Williams' The Juniper Passion, (which toured Italy) as well as understudying the bass soloist in Haydn’s The Creation with the NZSO, and performing the role of Raimondo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor produced by Auckland Opera Studio and accompanied by the Auckland Chamber Orchestra.

Recently, James has placed in three major Australasian competitions – winning the NZ Aria and placing runner up in both the Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Competition and the Sydney Eistedfodd Aria Competition. He has also secured a coveted spot at the Merola Opera programme in San Francisco, where he will perform the title role in Don Pasquale. With the assistance and support of the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation and the inaugural Victoria League Scholarship for Singing, he will then join the prestigious National Opera Studio later in the year. James also received a Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation grant to support his second year at the Manhattan School of Music.
