This class will cover a wide range of possibilities in wood including turning, carving and effect and surface decoration using stains.

By turning on the lathe, cutting and hand carving students will learn to make their own forms in wood and Graeme is a master of embellishing and finishing a wooden surface and he will share techniques and tricks of the trade with students; including carving and texturing techniques, pyrography, colouring, use of multi-media elements and inlays.

This course will cover design and influences, tool selection and sharpening, wood selection, finishing techniques and safety. Students will be able to initiate projects to suit their skill level or Graeme can guide you through an appropriate project, making this course suitable for both beginner and advanced woodworkers. Led by an experienced tutor this will be a techniques based workshop with helpful advice on how to find your own creative identity.

The Summer Do Art School is the longest running mixed media art school in New Zealand and is proudly planned and hosted by the Quarry Arts Centre. Wood; turning, carving & surface with tutor Graeme Priddle is one of the 10 courses being held during the 2014 Summer Do.

The Summer Do provides professional art courses lead by tutors who stand out in their field of practice. Within the Summer Do are up to ten 7, 4 and 3 days courses covering a variety of media and disciplines. Participants are invited to join us by enrolling in a Summer Do course taking the opportunity to learn something new or perfect existing techniques in a stimulating fun encouraging environment.

The Summer Do also includes informal tutor talks, which are open to the public, the Summer Do Tutors Exhibition in the Yvonne Rust Gallery and an assortment of relaxed evening activities.

The Summer Do runs from 9am Sunday 5th to 4.30 Saturday the 11th January 2013, courses scheduled within that. The Quarry Arts Centre provides a inspirational creative environment just minutes from central Whangarei at 21 Selwyn Ave.
