Tread Lightly Tours is a community event showcasing Waiheke eco-homes and gardens with the aim of inspiring sustainable living.

Join us on one or both days for an intimate tour of diverse properties to learn from their passionate owners about ways of building, living and gardening that have less impact on the environment than conventional approaches. This is a unique opportunity to visit private homes and gardens and access the knowledge of experienced sustainability practitioners.

Rural Tour: We will head out to the beautiful “bottom end” of the island and visit 3 lifestyle properties including the only Straw Bale house on Waiheke, a stunning Cowes Bay solar powered home, and the fabulous Awaawaroa Eco village community. (Note: due to unforeseen circumstances the Poderi Crisci stop is no longer on this itinerary)

Urban Tour: Visit urban area properties that use available space and natural resources to the maximum. Our aim is to offer you a variety of home types ranging from beautiful modern "eco-architecture" to uniquely Waiheke "eco extreme" to lovingly kept "house next door". Come through the gate with us and be inspired by passionate homeowners to learn how you can adapt their sustainable practice to your home and garden.

Tours start and finish at Matiatia ferry terminal and are timed to coincide with ferry arrivals and departures. Tour 1 & 2 will visit the same rural homes, and Tour 3 & 4 will visit the same urban homes.

Rural Tour 1 will make an extra stop at the Kennedy Point terminal for those people wanting to travel from Half Moon Bay on the 9am ferry.

Limited tickets are available so be in quick to avoid disappointment. Tour group size is limited to 20 people per bus. The tour is in its second year following a sell-out in 2013, so don't miss out on a place!

An organic vegetarian or gluten free lunch is included in the ticket price. (Hand-made at our local Planit cafe, your lunch will include a vegan pasti or gluten free fritata, salad and a gluten/diary free biscuit. Tea and water will also be available on the lunch break.)

Rural Tour Homes

Katherine and Pete's house, Awaawaroa Eco Village: Get to see a mud brick home under construction and talk to the owners about how they walk the line between meeting NZ building code standards and environmentally responsible Eco Village standards.

Darren and Laura's house: This picturesque straw-bale home is off the grid, with owners Darren and Laura using solar energy and perma-culture principles as their way of life.

Louise and Michael's house, Cowes Bay Road: Be prepared to be wowed by this stunning finale to the trip:- A poured and rammed earth home that comes with a story of love and labour. Along with details about their third phase of solar installation, you'll hear about the virtues of running an electric car and the couple's journey towards self sufficiency. All this, while you enjoy the ambiance of their wonderful home.

Urban Tour Homes

Aaron and Myke’s House: The garden system of your dreams. Visit this neighborhood home to glimpse the possibilities for your own back garden. Hear about the newly installed solar panels and the virtues of wet back hot water from an inspiring couple.

Richard and Anna’s House: Be inspired to work with the sun’s natural energy by this beautiful example of sustainable practice in modern architecture. While not claiming to be “fully eco”, it is uniquely designed for energy efficiency and passive solar gain.

Ivan's House: Step into a magical world of no straight lines and an abundance of flavor. Not only has this dedicated owner created a place of aesthetic beauty, he has installed systems that work hard to leave a very small environmental foot print.
