‘The works’, a new temporary exhibition about the history of the Pukeuri freezing works, will run from 1 March through to 20 July at the North Otago Museum.

The exhibition, which has been developed collaboratively by the Alliance Pukeuri Plant and North Otago Museum, tells the story of North Otago’s important role in the meat export industry from the time that Totara Estate first shipped frozen meat to Britain in 1882, through the construction of the original Pukeuri Plant in 1914 and its changing operations until today.

An array of photographs, objects, product samples, advertising material, oral histories and interactives will provide visitors with a range of ways to engage with this part of the district’s history.

Visitors are invited to come and share their memories of the Pukeuri Plant by writing them down and adding them to a wall of memories.

Memories can also be shared on the North Otago Museum’s Facebook page.

The North Otago Museum is open every day (except Good Friday). Entry is free but donations are welcomed.
