Presenting the first of now three silent movie shows we will be doing this year showcasing the work the Wurlitzer pipe organ was originally created to do.

Taking you back to the golden days of going to the movies, the program includes a “play-in” by the Wurlitzer organ, early sound movie shorts and in the second half, Ron Clark accompanies another great silent movie comedy, Harold Lloyd’s 1923 classic “Safety Last”.

2013 marks the 90th anniversary of the release of this spectacular movie and we screen it in association with the Harold Lloyd Trust in the USA.! "Safety Last!" includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Harold Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures. It is still popular at revivals, and it is viewed today as one of the great film comedies. The film's title is a play on the common expression, "safety first," which places safety as the primary priority to avoid accidents. Lloyd performed some of his climbing stunts despite losing a thumb and forefinger in an accident while making a film four years earlier.

See and hear how the Wurlitzer organ brings the silent movie to life through the power of music!

A special fundraising event to support the on-going upkeep of the Hollywood Cinema - helping to preserve the home of Auckland's historic Wurlitzer pipe organ. Join us for an afternoon of laughter and entertainment!

Tickets on sale at the door on the day from 1:15pm. For more info, contact James on (09) 525 7067.
