Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a highly experiential and integrative mind-body programme, offered in a supported and nourishing environment. Within MBSR, the meditation practices of calm-abiding, body-awareness and walking meditation are joined with gentle yoga, self-compassion practices and teachings from humanistic and positive psychology; to promote mindfulness in everyday life, self-awareness, inner peace, harmonious relationships and physical wellbeing.

MBSR is a secular programme, suitable for people of all cultures and beliefs.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the awareness that arises when we bring a purposeful, compassionate and non-judgemental attention to the unfolding of experience, moment by moment, and day by day. Mindfulness is an innate human capacity, an ancient contemplative practice, and a consciousness discipline within the field of the behavioural sciences.

The Origins of MBSR:

The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programme was established by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Centre for Mindfulness in Health Care, Medicine and Society, Massachusetts University Medical School, USA. Since 1979, over 20,000 people worldwide have completed the MBSR programme.

Who Will Benefit:

Anyone wishing to learn the way of mindfulness meditation, and to cope more effectively with the rapid pace of modern life. Anyone seeking to better manage stress, anxiety, depression and pain or illness. Nearly three decades of research suggests that regular practice of mindfulness meditation promotes:

- Improved ability to manage emotion, and increased empathy.
- Improved focus, attention, decision making capacity, work performance and satisfaction.
- Greater capacity to prevent recurrences of anxiety, depression and addictive behaviours.
- Long lasting physical and psychological stress reduction, and relief from chronic pain.
- Increased blood flow, reduced blood pressure, protection from developing hypertension, and reduced risk and severity of cardiovascular disease.

Full day meditation retreat on Sunday, 7th September

Cost: $380.00+GST includes a CD of guided meditations and course book.

About Lila O’Farrell, BA (Psychology) MA (Counselling), MDiv (Interfaith Theology), MNZAC:

After attending the MBSR training for health care professionals with Drs Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli, Lila has taught MBSR in health care, hospice and corporate settings since 2003. She has nurtured her own mindfulness meditation practice for over twenty years; one of which was spent as a Buddhist monastic. Lila is a specialist therapist, providing individual and couples therapy, and teaching the MBSR programme within a primary health care (medical) setting in Auckland. She is an ordained interfaith contemplative minister, and a former professional hospice chaplain.
Lila’s work is informed by powerful teachings about life’s meaning received from hospice clientele, years of facilitating the successful recognition and repair of distressing emotional habitual patterns, and continual witnessing of the ways in which MBSR transforms participants’ lives. Lila integrates relevant and radical teachings from ancient wisdom, psychology and neuroscience – making meditation fresh, accessible and vital for modern times and minds
