Travel with Steam Incorporated north from Kapiti via Palmerston North up the NIMT to the Gumboot Capital of Taihape in the heart of Rangitikei. Have a pre Easter escape by enjoying a full day of nostalgic rail travel and the Gumboot Day festivities at Taihape.

The journey includes crossing many impressive viaducts in the Mangaweka area including the South Rangitikei (300metre long & 80 metres high) and the Makohine viaducts.

The train will be hauled by our coal fired steam locomotive Ja1271. We will be using our classic steel heritage carriages. Included in the train will be a guards van with open viewing platforms.

The train has a buffet counter selling sandwiches, sausages, hamburgers, drinks and snacks plus a small souvenir shop. You are welcome to bring your own food along. In the evening there is the option of a pre ordered roast meal at Palmerston North Includes hot Champaign ham and freshly roasted chicken, gourmet potatoes, roasted medley pumpkin/kumara baby carrots, cauliflower with cheese sauce and gravy. Plus dessert. Cost $27.

During the journey we plan to make two stops to enable you to photograph the train in action. There will also be time for a leg stretch at Palmerston North in both directions while the locomotive is serviced. At Taihape there will be the option of watching the locomotive being turned on the turntable in preparation for the return journey.

Train fare ex Kapiti Stations Adult $129, Child $89. Ex Levin Adult $109, Child $79 or from Palmerston North/Feilding/Marton Adult $95, Child $65
Group discounts are available. 5% for 8 to 15 and 10% for over 16. We can also offer a special rate for booking a whole carriage. These have between 42 and 56 seats each.

At Taihape the town centre is just a short walk from the railway station. There are several cafes plus a selection of fast food outlets. Most shops in the town will be open for our visit including several specialty & gift shops. There is an information centre based in the town hall and the nearby local museum will be open.

The Gumboot Day festival takes place in the Taihape Memorial Park, only a 500metre walk from the station. Heaps of entertainment. In addition to gumboot throwing you are likely to enjoy, lawnmower racing, Baa Black sheep racing, dog barking competitions and gumboot art. Plenty of craft and food stalls too.

If you want to stretch your legs there is a couple of short walks available. One is Mt Stewart reserve which has a viewing platform at the top giving lovely views. This walk takes approx. only 20 minutes to the top.

There will also be an option to try some gentle rafting at Mangaweka. More info for this option will be supplied with the ticket mail out.
