Whats it all about?
The Community Arts and Circus Trust New Zealand (CACTNZ) are producing an exciting show for this year’s Fringe. To be premièred in Lower Hutt at the Dowse Square the show will also be performed in Wellington with a totally different feel and different local groups and young people.

Featuring international fire artists this theatrical fire show follows the narrative of one young mans journey to self acceptance, as well as exploring important issues such as bullying and being proud of who you are the show will involve live music, costumes, spectacle, and local youth groups and organisations.

The young people will be involved in the rehearsal and show creation process throughout January and February which will even involve them making their own fire equipment (and learning to use it in a safe and controlled way) this is a great opportunity for the young people to learn new skills, be involved in a professional production and to work alongside international fire artists.

They have professional performers from the New Zealand, the UK and Australia and the show will involve dragonstaffs, fire hula hoops, contact balls, fire fans and more!

CACTNZ director Claire French says ‘We wanted to create something unique – too many fire shows are boring with people just spinning fire equipment and not interacting with the audience. Our idea will take the audience on a journey, it will be a performance all ages and backgrounds can relate to. Involving young people, particularly those at risk, is a big part of our project. We want to give the young people the opportunity to experience something totally different, and to do this in a safe and supportive environment. CACTNZ is all about that, this project hits the aims we are trying to achieve as a trust. To be able to support the people who need it the most and to bring community arts into the hearts of communities is what we love to do.’

What’s more the show is based on Koha (donation). This allows the show to be accessible to all – audience members can donate what they can afford and all of the proceeds goes back to the charities involved.

A big thank you to Creative Communities Lower Hutt for their funding support!

If you wish to get involved in this Fringe project or want to know more please contact Claire French on 0226721018 or email cactnz@gmail.com.
