I thought I knew you is a new body of work which intersects Forbes observational natural history studies and her upcoming research project where she considers Place, both at large and intimately through post-photographic practice and video.

Set in her current location in the Cook Islands, the series is a selection of digital landscapes and painted studies which examine the clash between the Age of Enlightenment and Romanticism, where one, in effect, sought to cancel out the other.

“Getting to know a place is both an act of intimacy and process of reductionism. We are constantly caught between our preferred perceptions and the realism of the place itself. But there is a middle ground, a strange, transient and less definable place that is always filled with its own reason whether or not we can understand it.”

“This is a series of portraits of places and their characters referencing the histories that guide me and my own experiences of being there to see it. It’s not linear or as clearly cut as we might like. It’s a continuous exchange between what I expect to see, and what I actually see.” - Forbes
