Storylines

The Storylines Festival Family Days are a breeding ground for this generation's Margaret Mahy or Joy Cowley, or indeed for the next Eleanor Catton! But more than that, they are the place where our children and their families and our authors, illustrators and storytellers share the magic of our stories, right here and now.

It’s Storylines Festival time again, and we have an amazing line-up of fabulous writers, illustrators, storytellers and performers ready to share the excitement of books and reading with children, their families and communities. The Storylines Christchurch Free Family Day will be held on Sunday 24 August at the Upper Riccarton Library, between 10am and 3pm.

New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards 2014 winner Rachel Stedman (A Necklace of Souls) and finalists Melinda Szymanik (A Winter’s Day in 1939) and Fifi Colston (Wearable Wonders) are among the guest authors and illustrators taking part in Christchurch this year.

The Festival also welcomes a fantastic group of performers to the Christchurch Family Days: children’s musical play expert Julie Wylie, storyteller Nickie Wellbourn, and educational theatre group perform will be bringing books to life through their performances.

We have local poet Greg O'Connell running a special Poetry Zone in 2014, with activities and interactive poetry performances happening throughout the day. Illustrators Trish Bowles, Gavin Bishop and Fifi Colston will be demonstrating their art in the Artists in Action, Illustrators Zone.

Mark Sommerset, author of award winning (Baa Baa Smart Sheep), Anna MacKenzie, young adult writer and David Hill, children’s and young adult writer, are also among the line-up of top authors on hand to share their love of stories and books with young readers.

The day will be packed full of free family fun. Arts and crafts, performances, author panel discussions, competitions, face painting, book signings, and plenty of storytelling!

There's also competitions and much, much more!
