“Reconnecting Northland” is a large-scale ecological restoration initiative which is beginning to gather momentum in Te Tai Tokerau. This region-wide approach, based on the principles of ecological and social connectivity, aims to link projects and groups to create large-scale change for the benefit of Northland’s natural environment and its people.

In 2008, The Tindall Foundation initiated a search for a maximum impact, long-term programme which would change the face of ecological health in New Zealand. They were drawn to large landscape ecological restoration projects and related research overseas, and partnered with WWF-New Zealand and NZ Landcare Trust to scope such a programme here in NZ – assessing various regional landscapes against a wide range of relevant environmental, social and economic criteria. In 2012 Northland was selected as the region of greatest opportunity for large landscape ecological restoration, and the programme was born.
