Mulled Wine Concerts presents NZTrio.

Versatile, exciting and masters of their craft, NZTrio epitomises the relevance of live music in a digital age.

This group smashes preconceptions of classical music being stuffy and intimidating by engaging their listeners with intimate and dynamic performances. NZTrio inspires people of all walks of life to see classical music, both old and new as approachable, essential and meaningful. Described as a ‘national treasure’, NZTrio celebrated their first decade together in 2012, and continue to thrill both national and international audiences.

Violinist Justine Cormack, cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins first joined forces in 2002 and were Ensemble in Residence at The University of Auckland from 2004-2009. Their artistry, intensity and approachability have captivated music-lovers throughout the world. Recent international highlights include tours to Cambodia, Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, annual return tours to China and Taiwan, as well as festival concerts in London and Sydney.

Mary Gow, organiser of Mulled Wine Concerts, says "We are delighted that NZTrio have agreed to return to Paekakariki where they have a devoted following. I'm sure that this year's programme will prove to be a fantastic experience for Kapiti concert-goers".

Their 2014 programme features Beethoven’s Trio Op 1 No 3 "c minor" and by popular request, Dvorak’s magnificent "Trio Op 65 no 3 in f minor". These masterworks are skilfully matched with mesmerising music by two of New Zealand’s most talented composers. "Aegean" is one of John Psathas’ recent compositions, a beautiful, lyrical piece that is one of a pair that Psathas conceived as two individual works, both built on a rhythmic piano groove. As part of NZTrio's efforts to encourage NZ composers, Claire Cowan was commissioned in 2013 to compose a new work for the trio’s Kaleidoscopes Tour and her piece "Subtle Dances" was a hit with audiences and critics alike. Its tango-esque, jazz-like sound is hypnotic and sublime.

Strongly advised to reserve early.
