Waitangi Day free concert!

For 55 years, the NZSO National Youth Orchestra has provided New Zealand’s finest young musicians the opportunity to work together towards the common goal of excellence. In 2014 join us for four unique performances.

Each season ticket holder may request one complimentary ticket for each concert.

Lilburn - Aotearoa Overture
Hindson - Homage to Metallica
Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade

Ben Northey: conductor
Vesa-Matti Leppänen: violin

A fitting tribute to our young country on Waitangi Day, the NZSO National Youth Orchestra performs Lilburn’s Aotearoa Overture. The unabashed optimism of this early work has an exhilarating freshness that meets its match in Homage to Metallica by Australian composer Matthew Hindson. This fantasy pays tribute to the rhythmic vivacity and virtuosic extremes of heavy metal music and reminds us of an orchestra’s sheer power whilst Rimsky-Korsakov’s luscious Scheherazade evokes the perfumed dreams of the Arabian Nights stories. Hall of the Mountain King conductor Benjamin Northey will lead the ensemble, and NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen will play alongside this generation of future musical stars.

Concert duration: 1h25
