An ornate crystal decanter, an intricately woven flax panel, a gothic fringed lampshade, a floral tea cosy and a swathe of striking jewellery– the New Objects auction is a rare opportunity to acquire one-off design works by outstanding contemporary makers. The specially curated collection, New Objects will be exhibited at Objectspace from 8 August and all the objects will be auctioned on Wednesday 13 August 2014, starting from 5.30pm. The objects have been custom created by 30 renowned makers including: Warwick Freeman, Lisa Walker, Octavia Cook, Tessa Laird, Peter Lange, Karl Leonard, Rosemary McLeod, Manon van Kouswijk, and the Crystal Chain Gang.

Philip Clarke, Director of Objectspace says the makers in New Objects represent contemporary practice of the “very highest level of accomplishment”, with many of them being the recipients of national and international awards. “New Objects is an important opportunity for people to view and acquire the latest works by renowned contemporary makers.”

The works for auction include designed household objects, ceramics, textiles, weaving, appropriating materials, and an impressive group of brooches, necklaces and earrings, representing the growing force of the New Zealand jewellery making. Two jewellery exhibitors, Lisa Walker and Warwick Freeman, are recipients of the world’s most prestigious award for contemporary jewellery – an award only received by 17 people in the world. “It’s an indication of the international standing of contemporary New Zealand practice and of the works featured in New Objects,” say Clarke.

The auction is being staged to mark Objectspace’s ten year anniversary, and create a new opportunity for makers and their supporters. All New Objects contributors are recent Objectspace exhibitors. The event will be run by James Parkinson of Art + Object auction house and bidding is only open to registered buyers. You can register in person at Objectspace, or by phone (09 376 6216). Absentee and telephone bidding is available. The auction catalogue can be obtained from Objectspace, or downloaded from the website under events.
