Mt. Ruapehu

Set on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the heart of the stunning World Heritage Tongariro National Park lies the mighty Bruce Road, starting from the base of Whakapapa Ski Area the Bruce Road snakes its way down the mountain for 6km, dropping 478 vertical metres. With a smooth surface and winding corners this is a recipe for some serious vertical fun.

Mt Ruapehu Gravity Festival 2014 is a 3 day event offering managed descents of the Bruce Road. The event is split into two with the first day and a half focused on longboarding free ride descents top to bottom. Then midday Saturday the focus will change to Drift Trikes with a half day of top to bottom descents. On the Sunday the Drift Trikes will go through qualification rounds through the morning and Trike battles in the afternoon.

Keen to enter?
This year we are focusing on the two sports of Longboarding and Drift Trikes (but watch this space..) The Bruce Road will be traffic managed with the road closed for short periods during each descent. Highest risk areas will have some protection measures. Please make sure you read and understand the terms and conditions to be involved and that your equipment is of a good standard.

The Bruce Road is a solid undertaking on a board, the ability to stay in control within a road width, maintaining control over your speed through a variety of corners and pitches and the ability to stop when and if required by event officials. Having an awareness of other participants at all times is also important as you will be descending in small groups.

Drift trikes:
The trike must be of a good standard with brakes fitted (compulsory). The ability to control your speed to a manageable level at all times is critical. Riders must be able to remain within the width of the road on a variety of corners and pitches have and the ability to stop, when and if required by event officials. All drift trikes must pass the 15 point safety inspection before being used in the event (see terms & conditions).

Or just keen to watch?
Great come on up and check this out. We will have designated parking and viewing areas at a few points along the road and at the start and finish lines. These areas will be managed by marshals for safety management of the road so it is important you follow their directions. Lorenz’s Bar & Café (LBC) is open all day for great coffee and food at the top of the road.

If you’re keen to have a try:
In one of the top car parks with a gentle slope we plan to have on offer some Drift Trikes and Longboards for people to have a go.
