Auckland Jazz and Blues Club presents:
Makareta and Blue Pearl

Dynamic singer/songwriter/Latin percussionist Margaret Umbers(Makareta) fronts her jazz band Blue Pearl with a sound described as "strong liquor, cigars and silk".

Involved in the art scene from an early age, her musical flavours have come from soul, RnB, acid jazz, Latin, Brazilian, swing and Waiata Maori.

Margaret launched her band Blue Pearl at the Bay of Islands Jazz festival 2011. They have since played many jazz clubs, hotels, restaurants, vineyards, functions and festivals since, including Queenstown Jazz Festival 2013, support for NZ Renee Geyer Tour, Fiji Jazz Festival 2014, Queenstown Winter Festival 2014

Blue Pearl band features the superb musicianship of:
Matt Watson on piano/trumpet/flugal
Tony Masterantonio on guitar
Edgar San Gabriel on bass
Neil Williamson on drums

Margaret has just released her debut original album
'Love on a Swing' available on iTunes or Marbecks record store

"Umber’s smooth vocals create a nostalgic dreamy mood and shine beyond the large arsenal of instruments which span flugel, ukulele, saxophone, trumpet, piano, drums, guitar and most notably bass played by Kiwi four-string legend Billy Kristian. The instrumentation is arranged in a classic, smooth jazz style and slips through the motions with ease, simply aiding as a backing track. In Whatumanuwa she showcases the beauty of te reo, something I was eager to hear more of in the later tracks, and in the bossa nova-flavoured Stars Will Fall she continues to show off wider multi-lingual abilities". - Paul Thompson. NZ musicians mag April 2014

"Makareta's songs are up to the standard of the American songwriters of the 30s and 40s. I can give no higher praise than that". - Joe Carberry Northern Jazz Society

"Makareta Umbers' charisma together with jazz vocals and her evocative lyrics, supported by irresistible jazz style melodies capture the true essence of an era that unfortunately modern music seems to be losing". - Mike Nettmann. Bay Chronicle.
