Karen Sewell: Lost

14 October 2014 - 7 December 2014, Little Gallery. Donations appreciated.

Lost presents an uncanny futuristic vision that offers a critique of the global hegemony which actively promotes consumer culture. As consumers we negotiate/submit to the paean of advertising inherent in the mall ‘experience’ and are lured and then seduced with promises: promises of empowerment, happiness, fulfillment, youth and beauty. This utopia promised by consumerism is something Karen Sewell suggests is actually a 'Clayton’s reality', something that cannot and does not deliver on its promises or satisfy for very long and often leaves us unfulfilled, diminished and financially impoverished.

Lost attempts to represent at a psychological level the impact of secular, consumerist society on identity, including emotional and spiritual well-being. Group dynamics and automation are explored along with notions of loss and displacement.

Karen Sewell is currently completing a Master of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. She was the supreme award winner of the Trust Art and Sculpture Award in 2011, a finalist in the New Zealand Adam Portraiture Award in 2012 and a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards in 2013. Her practice encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and photography.
