Joseph Michael

29 July 2014 - 30 August 2014, AV Room. Donations appreciated.

Joseph Michael’s multi-media installation, dark cloud/white light, comprises ten remarkable landscape videos filmed in remote, empty locations throughout New Zealand.

Captured through time-lapse photography and using the latest 2D and 3D technology, each video is filmed over a 24 hour period. Each evolving landscape plays out as a loop video that seamlessly condenses more than 10,000 individual photographs. Each video is complemented by an original soundtrack composed specifically for the work. This exacting technique allows the viewer to experience the magic of the landscape as it slowly transitions from night into day.

Michael grew up in Central Otago and feels a deep sense of connection to that region. He wanted to explore why so many New Zealanders feel such an emotional connection to our natural landscape. Laden with heavy equipment, including five super high-resolution Nikon cameras, four tripods and twelve lenses, he travelled to some of the most inaccessible parts of New Zealand, mostly in the South Island, in search of ‘remote, pristine and off-the-beaten track landscapes’.

Using cutting-edge time-lapse photography and 3D film, Michael has captured the raw power and natural grandeur of New Zealand’s epic landscapes in new and exciting ways.

Joseph Michael completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dunedin. He was artist-in-residence in Whanganui in 2004. He has produced a large and diverse body of work in film, live broadcast television, documentaries and fine art, bringing his expertise to many aspects of the production process.

Michael was a guest speaker at TEDxAuckland 2013 where he shared with his audience how his dream of creating epic 24 hour time-lapse photography became a reality.
