This is the 27th year of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers Rotorua Annual Senior Music Scholarship Competition.

The day begins in the Concert Chamber at 10.55am with the daytime trials where each of the 12 competitors present a 15 to 20 minute programme of varied works on their instrument to the adjudicator - this year Katherine Austin from Waikato University. The trials end at approximately 5.00pm and will be followed by the Finals Concert starting at 7.30pm. Each competitor presents a 4-6 minutes programme in the first half after which the adjudicator selects 6 finalist for the second half of the Concert. The finalists then present another 4-6 minute selection of their programme after which the adjudicator selects the winner & placegetters. Prizes are $1000.00 first place, $500.00 2nd place, $300.00 3rd place and $100.00 each for 4th, 5th & 6th placings. Competitors will also compete for the Best Presentation Trophy and Best Piano Piece.

This year we have 8 pianist and 4 vocalists viaing for this prestigious award. Many of the students who have taken part in this competition have gone on to further their studies in music both nationally and internationally, and some returning or remaining in Rotorua to teach their instrument.

During the Evening Concert we also feature the Winners of the Annual Nell Trail Junior & Intermediate Scholarships which is held at the Eistedffod in June prior to the Senior Scholarship. This gives our younger musicians something to aspire to as well a performance opportunity in a very formal setting.
The Daytime Trials are free to the public and the Evening Finals Concert is $15.00 per person.
