A new series of talks Inspiring Women: MP "Herstory" has been organised by the Kapiti Womens Centre. The aim of the talks is to empower women by educating them about New Zealand women in politics and engaging them to participate in the system that impacts our lives and communities on a daily basis. All women welcome.

Our second speaker is Jan Logie an MP for the Green Party and for the Mana electorate. She is a spokesperson for Human Rights, Rainbow issues, Immigration, income support, Women, Pacific Island and ethnic affairs and overseas development aid.

One of the aims of the Kapiti Womens Centre is to raise awareness of social and political issues affecting women in the community and where appropriate support, empower and/or advocate for change. We won the vote in 1893 - after years of ardent campaigning and petitioning - today around a third of the seats in parliament are held by women (Thanks to MMP this is a great increase from 13% in 1984)! Come and join us to hear from these strong, diverse and inspiring women who are working hard within parliament to represent us. Here are some of the questions Kapiti Womens Centre has asked:

“We would like to hear about your personal journey from a young woman, within your family and community, to a position of political power and influence in New Zealand. What important issues motivate you? What political outcomes do you feel proud to be part of? Do you have interesting stories and experiences as a woman in parliament? How can our local women add their voice to the political processes? What have you found effective in bringing positive changes for women?”

The “Herstory” portion of the event will be followed by an opportunity for members of the audience to ask questions of our MPs.
