Two of our favourite bands – Golden Curtain and The Roulettes – will be joined by newcomers Fazerdaze at Auckland’s Wine Cellar on Saturday August 2nd – and for one of them, despite their impressive pedigree, it will be their first ever Auckland show. Golden Curtain are based in Napier – but they have quite the ‘Cosmocolitan’ history (the name of their label). They all come from great bands - Andrew McKenzie (Grand Prix), Andrew Gladstone (Garageland) and Brad Gamble (A Twin Moon). In fact, bassist Brad Gamble was named by US music blog Caught in the Carousel as one of the current “Eight Bass Players You Should Know About” – in the company of the bassists from Sierra, Elephant Stone, Peter Hook and the Light, Northern Arms, Camera Obscura, Lee Ranaldo and the Dust, and Palms.

Their latest album 'Dream City' follows on from last year's 'English Tuning', and takes its title from a recurring dream set in a familiar city that doesn't exist in the real world; and the band chose their name from the late Ian Morris's term for an extra, additional part of a song, i.e. “…and then you open the 'Golden Curtain.” A review from Caught in the Carousel, says that Golden Curtain are “A nervy balance of dark indie pop and rapturous, scruffy soul Golden Curtain’s Dream City confirms that this New Zealand outfit may very well be one of the very best bands on the planet.”

You’ve heard The Roulettes (Outrageous Fortune, Kiwi FM, bNets… and The Rock). Formed by dynamic duo Ben Grant and Justin McLean in the ‘00s, they are now backed by the relaxed muscle of Mark Queenin on drums. After two well received EPs (You Want It – “Exceptionally good” – Nick Bollinger, Unread Books – “A rocking good time” Anna Schlotjes, NZM) they return with a short sharp album of killer tunes. Their latest album ‘The Roulettes’ (self-titled) has been greeted with high praise and inclusion on bNet playlists: ‘thoroughly enjoyable… short and sweet… rhythm, riff and attitude’ states NZ Musician Magazine’s Amanda Mills while elsewhere’s Graham Reid agrees, proclaiming their ‘fine sense of focused economy…would slip in comfortably alongside the best of US indie rock… back-to-back with the new wave of psyche-pop’

The Roulettes chuck in the best bits from 60s psychedelic beat-bands and Motown to now, adding some amped up riffery without sacrificing classic song structures… and pump it up to date in an explosion of swoony pop energy.

And introducing… Fazerdaze Kiwi FM sensation, picked by Charlotte Ryan et al as most likely to succeed… new to the scene but fast becoming an indie fixture… following gigs with Beach Pigs and Anthony Tonnon, if you’ve not heard of her you most certainly will.
