Glen Wagstaff - guitar, compositions
Auckland Jazz Orchestra

Contemporary Big Band Arrangements

Glen Wagstaff is a US born composer, guitarist and graduate of the Christchurch Jazz School. During his time studying, he was introduced to the music of Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue and Kenny Wheeler and discovered a love for composing particularly in a jazz orchestra setting, in his final year of study he received the Jack Urlwin Scholarship for his arranging portfolio. After a brief stint in New York and Toronto he was inspired to form his own 10 piece group in 2012 featuring some of Christchurch's finest musicians.

Blurring the lines between genres, Glen's music is a refreshing mix of modern jazz, classical, traditional folk and world music with an emphasis on improvisation. The pieces include a balance of simple, evocative melodies, to intricate orchestration, at times dark and chaotic.

Glen has performed with a variety of different groups including the CSO and the Symposium Jazz Orchestra with whom he is preparing to record a debut album of his own compositions in early December. He is excited to be returning to Auckland to perform in the CJC concert series, this time premiering his new big band material with the critically acclaimed Auckland Jazz Orchestra.
