The Punk Singer takes us back to the point at which feminism and punk rock collided. At the centre of this collision was Kathleen Hanna, best known for her role as lead singer in the band Bikini Kill and her involvement in the Riot Grrrl movement. Kathleen emerged in the 1990s grunge scene as an unrelenting feminist voice, winning her praise, support and hatred.

The Auckland Women’s Centre is excited to be screening such an important piece of the feminist, punk rock and grunge story.

Directed by Sini Anderson, the film includes appearances by Kathleen herself as she discusses her childhood and her drive, as well as her friendships, Kurt Cobain’s involvement, her relationships, and the reaction of fan, peers and the media to her art and expression.

The documentary has just finished screening at the International Film Festival in Auckland, having premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2013. Its use of archival footage and interviews has resulted in a film outstanding in its style and content.

“Other people can think what they want, they just have to stay out of my way.”
-Kathleen Hanna
