KFC Presents an intimate night with Esther Stephens & The Means and Noah Slee. A rare chance to see two of Auckland's most progressive neo-soul acts in their home town before they all get catapulted off to gigs in Melbourne, New York, Berlin, and other far-flung parts of the world.

Esther Stephens & the Means

Continuing the long term creative partnership which most notably produced three tracks from 'The Ends EP', and single 'Under You', Esther Stephens & The Means have made it official. On the back of a successful Red Bull Sound Select NZ tour and the release of their single, 'Free', they have joined both forces and monikers, and are currently producing an EP under this newly unified name, due for release Summer 2014.

A mainstay of the Auckland music scene, singer & actress Esther Stephens has been a master collaborator, lending her pipes to acts including Sola Rosa, Isaac Aesili and Tama Waipara. Esther’s vocal style is a blend of old soul and contemporary pop, citing influences including classic luminaries like Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin and Etta James, and modern acts such as Bjork and Lauryn Hill.

Her first underground release ‘Asahi’ was praised by music journalist Martyn Pepperell as a ‘sultry, richly toned trip-hop/modern soul voice through an engaging melodic and rhythmic frame’ (Martyn Pepperell, Vanguard Red Magazine) and in 2012 Esther was given special mention after the release of the chart topping Home Brew album on which she features. ‘Stephens is a true standout, and adds her smoky-toned R&B talents to four different tracks including the classily smouldering Plastic Magic.’ (Lydia Jenkin, NZ Herald). This collaboration also secured her position as one of the promising new talents in the independent collective, Young Gifted and Broke.

Esther’s New York produced, NZ On Air funded debut single and accompanying video 'Under You' was released September 2013.

With an inimitable sound best described as groove-based music, The Means is at once a band, a production unit, a burgeoning empire, and a philosophy.

Featuring Marika Hodgson on bass, Abraham Kunin on guitar and Tom Broome on drums, three artists of outstanding credentials join forces to create a project far-reaching in it's scope and ambition.

'The Ends EP' was The Means first offering in 2012, from newly founded Heavy Trigger Records, in association with Young Gifted and Broke.

Noah Slee

Brisbane-based artist Noah Slee is gaining a reputation as an experimental and uniquely creative talent in the contemporary soul scene of Australia and New Zealand.

Noah supported Jill Scott on her Australia Tour in 2013, and will be performing alongside Common, Mos Def, Anthony Hamilton, Maxwell, Aloe Blacc & many more sensational artists at Soulfest 2014

Known for his outstanding genre-bending performances, captivating listeners with impressive syrupy gospel-soul like vocal skills. Noah blends contemporary soul, prog RnB, future beats and indie electronica. His modern take on soul has received praise for Grammy nominated soul singer Jill Scott and seen the artist tour Australia alongside Rufus & Yes You.

Releasing the mixtape independently with singles like 'Can't Stop' and 'Escape' caught the attention of New Zealand and Australian radio stations Triple J, Base FM, 95 BFM, Radio Active 88.6 FM and George FM, and also saw him spotlighted online by HillDilly, The Audience, Vanguard Red and Soul Bounce amongst other music websites.

Secluding himself in studios and home recording set-ups across the city, Noah Slee threw away the rulebook, emerging with a self-titled mixtape (including 'Can't Stop', a collaboration with Ryan Hemsworth), and the initial frame for his soon-to-be-released debut EP.
