Advent Retreat With Joy Ryan-Bloore

“Christ always seeks the straw of the most desolate cribs to make his Bethlehem.” - Thomas Merton

The Cosmic Christ continues to call us from the depths of our suffering world, seeking further incarnation. When we are in chaos, burdened with emotional or physical pain, wandering in a spiritual desert, or despairing about the poverty and injustice inflicted on the poor and vulnerable; when we are growing older and more vulnerable; when our lives lack meaning or are out of balance, God is gathering the straw of our suffering for Christ’s Bethlehem - finally revealed as a tiny child in the ‘desolate cribs’ of our souls and in the soul of the world; weak, vulnerable and constantly endangered by inner and outer forces, which like Herod, seek to destroy the divine child – the evolving consciousness.

This year’s readings (Year B) invite us into this radical process through total surrender to the will of God as manifested in our lives. This inner journey is most profoundly expressed in the words of Mary: “Be it done unto me according to your Word”. When we respond similarly, Christ comes to birth in our soul and we participate in a new level of human consciousness. By reflecting on the symbols and readings, it is hoped a deeper understanding of the inner truths of this age-old journey will bring renewed meaning to our lives. This silent Retreat will include input, aspects of Jungian psychology, sacred music and images and plenty of time for personal reflection.

Joy is a Jungian analyst working in Christchurch, providing psychotherapy, dream analysis, spiritual direction, supervision and retreats. She trained at the CG Jung Institute, Zurich (1993-1997) together with her husband Allan Bloore. She was a teaching sister with the Christchurch Sisters of Mercy (1964 – 1981) and has been a regular retreat facilitator at Rosary House Spiritual Life Centre in Christchurch. She was a member of the ANZSJA Executive 2006-2012 and is currently a member of the ANZSJA Ethics Committee.

Since her return from Zurich, she has facilitated retreats and seminars in New Zealand and Australia, particularly in Melbourne. Joy has a deep commitment to the eternal truths embodied in the rituals, dogmas and symbols of the Christian tradition and a passion for presenting them in a way which honours contemporary discoveries and evokes new insights.

She has a particular interest in the psycho-spiritual interface and much of her work is assisting people with that process.
