Described by a recent audience as "Dylan Thomas with a kiwi accent" - Chris Green performs Coaltown Blues as a fundraiser for Murchison Area School.

One of Mervyn Thompson's most important plays and a fascinating piece of New Zealand theatre. The significant and controversial playwright was a theatrical icon in the 1980s and 90s. He was fiercely passionate about New Zealand theatre, believing that it should have its own distinctive voice, and his work often reflected his socialist leanings.

He wrote this intensely personal one-man musical drama in 1984, basing it on his upbringing in mining communies on the West Coast in the 1930s and 40s.

It depicts both the tragedy and comedy of poverty and politics, and is at the same time a lament and celebration of his working-class roots.

His father, a miner and passionate union man, was also a gambler and violent towards both his wife and his children.

Green believes its content is still relevant today. "I feel Coaltown Blues resonates for today's audiences as child poverty and the realities of life in mining towns again fill our news screens on a regular basis."

Under the direction of Lindsay Rusling, Green brings to life a cast of characters from Thompson's early years, illustrating the hardship that still resonates in parts of the West Coast today.

Green performs about 20 roles, both male and female, without the aid of costume or set changes. His singing was described as "sublime" by the Dominio Post reviewer, who called the play "a Kiwi classic". Theatreview called it an "entertainingly insightful and timely revival".
