Chamber Music New Zealand presents New Zealand String Quartet with James Campbell

Helene Pohl (violin)
Douglas Beilman (violin)
Gillian Ansell (viola)
Rolf Gjelsten (cello)
James Campbell (clarinet)

"The Mozart Quintet has been a living presence with me for more than 50 years, and after Campbell's collaboration with the New Zealand String Quartet, I have no hope of hearing it played better." - Show Time Magazine.

There is something about the clarinet that has inspired composers to soar to the absolute heights of their art. Brahms came out of retirement for the clarinet. Mozart was so transfixed by the playing of Anton Stadler, the man who designed the modern instrument, that he wrote what would become the most exquisite utterances for winds - the concerto, the serenades, and this glorious quintet.

To make it even more special, the New Zealand String Quartet and James Campbell are old friends, and have performed together extensively. He has a staggering history: he has performed in over 30 countries, has recorded over 40 landmark CDs, has worked with everyone from the Amadeus and Guarneri Quartets, to Aaron Copland and Glenn Gould. In 1997 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and remains one of the "pre-eminent clarinet virtuosos" in the world.

Together, Campbell and the Quartet are recording the Brahms quintet for Naxos, and the programmes are completed by new New Zealand work and Brahms at his most light-hearted - the String Quartet No 3.

One of the most sublime ensemble combinations ever created - clarinet quintets, string quartet and clarinet from our own New Zealand String Quartet and virtuoso James Campbell.

Programme One
Brahms | Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op 115
New NZ work for string quartet from 'The Travelling Portmanteau'
Mozart | Quintet in A for Clarinet and Strings K581
