August is officially the last month of winter, with each successive day just a little bit longer, and the promise of spring just around the corner. In anticipation of the coming season, this month Zimmerman Art Gallery is featuring a series of floral works by Wellington artist Bruce Luxford.

A former student, then tutor, at the Wellington School of Philosophy, Luxford believes artists have a responsibility to respond to, and comment on, tensions and contradictions in our world.

But this month, in a departure from the artist’s usually philosophical works, the botanical studies displayed at Zimmerman Art Gallery are a charming interlude in Luxford’s artistic oeuvre. At their heart, the works are a simple response to the marvels of nature’s engineering, and the beauty of the natural world.

Some of the works reference Edwardian wallpapers, with their bold floral patterns and predominately pastel hues.

Other works play on the idea of wood, once a productive, living part of the ecological cycle, being harvested and manufactured to be given new life as something else. From artificially arranged stands of coloured pencils, bright new blooms burst forth.

Comprising a mix of shapes and sizes, Luxford’s light and lush works are the perfect antidote to a cold wet winter.

Bruce Luxford’s exhibition runs until 31 August 2014.
