BraveArt celebrates the positive powers of sport and art on the torsos of breast cancer survivors of the CanSurvive Dragon Boat Team of Wellington. Team members cast their own torsos in plaster, along with these celebrity supporters:

Celia Wade-Brown - Wellington Mayor
Paula Tesoriero - Paralympic cycling gold medallist
Jan Bolwell - Choreographer, dancer, breast cancer survivor,
Gareth Farr - Composer, star of Drumdrag Lilith LaCroix
Miranda Harcourt - Actor
Lorraine Downes - Former Miss Universe, 2014 Breast Cancer Foundation Ambassador.

Wellington artists were matched with paddlers and celebrities. The plaster busts provided them with a unique canvas to create artworks in a variety of styles. BraveArt artists range from oil and acrylic painters to theatre designers, jewellers and ceramic artists, street and pop artists. Master Plasterer Paul Stanton, from Carrara Ceilings in Johnsonville, assisted the team with the creation of the torsos.
He teamed up with Kapiti ta moko artist Toi to create his own BraveArt work featuring a pair of carved torsos.

The result is an astonishing collection of sixteen unique artworks created onto women’s bodies, many showing the scars of breast cancer treatment. All BraveArt works have been donated for sale at a charity auction event 21 August 2014, at Academy Galleries.
Proceeds will assist the team to compete in an international breast cancer survivors dragon boat festival in USA later this year.
