re.SPACE, 176 Victoria Street Te Aro, Wellington

All Ages

This solo contemporary jewellery exhibition by Sandra Schmid starts July 30 at re.SPACE.

In 'boondoggle' Sandra explores the multiple facets of identity and the human urge to belong as a basic motivation for wearing jewellery. For centuries jewellery has been a mark of social status or a statement of identity. The work in this exhibition explores a change in identity informed by the loss of transitions and imbued with multiculturalism. Schmid moved to New Zealand from Germany with her family 8 years ago.

'Boondoggle' refers to work which may not be of any real value for the community but is of personal importance and meaning. Jewellery provides symbols for status and/or identity. It may give the wearer a sense of belonging or sentimental connection independent of its value.

Sandra is in her final year of studies towards a Bachelor of Applied Arts at Whitireia in Porirua. Last year she received the Award of Excellence from the Jewellery Industry Association.

Schmid will give an artist talk on Sunday August 3 at 1pm.
