Peter Jackson (New Zealand) / R16
Bad Taste was the first of Peter Jackson’s films to make it from his Pukerua Bay backyard to cinema screens. The public service Alien Investigation and Detection Service (AIDS) operatives run amok with guns, food, vomit and misguided enthusiasm to rid the earth of alien Lord Crumb and his fast food gang, who want to turn earthlings into hamburgers.
Pre-show short: Peel (Dir Jane Campion, 1982, 8mins, G)
A father attempts to discipline his son for throwing an orange peel out the window on a summertime car trip. Peel won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film (1986), making director Jane Campion the first woman (and only New Zealander) to achieve the Cannes International Film Festival’s highest honour.
“It goes straight to the heart of the comic-horror genre in the way that those self-consciously camp items with the ridiculous names (Rabid Grannies, Redneck Zombies etc.) never do, and manages fully to live up to the promise of its title.” - Empire
“All you can do is sit back, hold on, and watch the roller coaster carnage unfold.” - BBC
“Widely regarded as an essential cult film.” - Ti West for Indiewire
