For his first show with Orexart, Angus Collis reinterprets the New Zealand landscape through a European perspective, where the scene may be familiar, but the light, colour and atmosphere brings to mind Spain, Italy or even Poland. This may be due to his reductive process, in which he continuously applies and rubs away paint on gesso, creating a look not unlike frescoes which have aged and bleached.

The scenes he paints are redolent of the spaces on the edge of human habitation. Even if figures occupy this space, the works exude a sense of quiet stillness. This impression is helped by perspective devices that lead the eye to distant horizons - a metaphor heavy with the promise of other places and experiences.

Angus Collis was born in Masterton in 1976, and now lives and works outside of Barcelona, Spain. He graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1993, and has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
